Evelyn and John Bertsche Scholarship

The Evelyn and John Bertsche Scholarship was founded in 2025 to support students a Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) as they prepare for ministry and leadership in the church.

In keeping with the intent of the fund, priority consideration may be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • International Students, or
  • Women interested in entering ministry, or
  • People interested in pastoral ministry.

All qualified students are eligible to apply and will be considered. When applicants do not meet the preferred criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to other students who demonstrate financial need and alignment with the purposes of the fund.

As of June 30, 2025, the scholarship's market value was $43,688. The earnings are paid out annually to cover approximately 15% of tuition.

More about Evelyn and John

Evelyn (Dyck) Bertsche was born in Newton, KS in 1936, the daughter of a Mennonite pastor. John Bertsche grew up on a farm near Pontiac, IL. John and Evelyn met while attending Bethel College in North Newton, KS and were married in 1958. John was an internal medicine physician, practicing in Bloomington/Normal, IL. In the 1980s Evelyn pursued her interest in pastoral ministry and spiritual direction at AMBS, and later served as associate pastor at the Mennonite Church of Normal for 14 years. Evelyn and John were active in the Mennonite Church of Normal, Normal, IL and were strong supporters of Mennonite higher education. They also served as host family for nearly 40 international students at Illinois State University.
