James R. and Ly Tran Klassen Scholarship

The James R. and Ly Tran Klassen Scholarship was founded in 2025 by James and Ly Tran to support students a Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) as they prepare for ministry and leadership in the church.

In keeping with the intent of the fund, priority consideration may be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Students from Southeast Asia
• Students from a minority ethnic group
• Students demonstrating financial need

All qualified students are eligible to apply and will be considered. When applicants do not meet the preferred criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to other students who demonstrate financial need and alignment with the purposes of the fund.

As of February 16, 2026, the scholarship's market value was $25,000. The earnings are paid out annually to cover approximately 8% of tuition.

More about the Klassens

James graduated from AMBS in 1972. He served as a volunteer with MCC in Vietnam from October 1972 to April 1976. James and Ly were married in 1982. James pastored Vietnamese churches in the Dallas metroplex from 2000 through 2017. James and Ly are currently active in the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and he preaches bilingually in a Vietnamese Church in Wichita once or twice a month. They are grateful for the many ways God has blessed them. They are grateful for the solid understanding of the Bible and Christian Pacifism that AMBS gave James. He received his Doctor of Ministry from Truett Seminary in 2012.
