Paul and Mary Lederach Scholarship

The Paul and Mary Lederach Scholarship was founded in 1986 to support students a Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) as they prepare for ministry and leadership in the church.

In keeping with the intent of the fund, priority consideration may be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

• A Mennonite student with a call to pastoral leadership who shows promise in preaching and supporting the biannual Lectureship on Preaching

All qualified students are eligible to apply and will be considered. When applicants do not meet the preferred criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to other students who demonstrate financial need and alignment with the purposes of the fund.

As of June 30, 2025, the scholarship's market value was $56,278. The earnings are paid out annually to cover approximately 19% of tuition.

More about Paul and Mary

In 1978, Paul completed 29 years of service at Mennonite Publishing House in Scottdale, Pa. During his years in Scottdale (1952-1978) he was active in Allegheny Mennonite Conference. His ministerial credentials-- as a minister in 1944 and bishop in 1949--were transferred from Franconia Mennonite Conference in 1954. In Allegheny Conference Paul served as bishop/overseer, a term as moderator, and for many years as chair of the Leadership Commission with Irv Weaver, Allegheny Conference moderator. They felt that the seminary was preparing scholars, counselors and administrators, but not preachers. Yet when they worked with congregations in leadership change, preaching was always the primary skill hoped for in the new pastoral leader. Paul and Mary established this scholarship fund in 1986 to encourage excellence in preaching, expand opportunities to teach and develop preaching skills, bring effective preachers to the campus as role models, and provide scholarships for students committed to excellence in preaching.
