Janeen Bertsche Johnson Scholarship
The Janeen Bertsche Johnson Scholarship was established in 2022 to support students a Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) as they prepare for ministry and leadership in the church.
In keeping with the intent of the fund, priority consideration may be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- women preparing for pastoral ministry, or
- students from Japan or Korea, or
- students preparing for campus ministry.
All qualified students are eligible to apply and will be considered. When applicants do not meet the preferred criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to other students who demonstrate financial need and alignment with the purposes of the fund.
As of June 30, 2025, the scholarship's market value was $29,708. The earnings are paid out annually to cover approximately 10% of tuition.

More about Janeen
Janeen Bertsche Johnson received her Master of Divinity degree from AMBS in 1989 and her Doctor of Ministry degree from AMBS in 2026. From 1989-1995, she served on the pastoral team of Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church in Wichita, Kansas. In 1995, she returned to AMBS to become the seminary's first campus pastor, a role she has held since then. She also has roles as core adjunct faculty, alumni director, and admissions counselor, and she serves as the Rooted and Grounded Conference coordinator.
Janeen has also had many involvements at the congregational, conference, and denominational level, including serving as president of Central District Conference and serving eight years on the executive board of Mennonite Church USA. Janeen and her husband Barry are members of Eighth Street Mennonite Church in Goshen and have two adult children and two grandsons. This scholarship was founded by Janeen's father, David Bertsche, using estate gifts from Janeen's mother Evie, who died in February 2022.
