About

Sue Conrad Howes Pastoral Leadership Fund

The Sue Conrad Howes Pastoral Leadership Fund was founded in 2015 to support students a Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) as they prepare for ministry and leadership in the church.

In keeping with the intent of the fund, priority consideration may be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • single or unmarried women, or
  • a Mennonite (preferred, but other Anabaptist groups considered), or
  • pursuing an M.Div degree (preferably for pastoral ministry in a local Anabaptist congregation).

All qualified students are eligible to apply and will be considered. When applicants do not meet the preferred criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to other students who demonstrate financial need and alignment with the purposes of the fund.

As of June 30, 2025, the scholarship's market value was $17,860. Once the fund reaches $25,000, the earnings will pay out annually to assist applicable students.

More about Sue

Sue earned her MDiv degree from AMBS in 2005. When she attended AMBS and earned her Master of Divinity degree, Sue Conrad Howes was single. To provide for her financial needs during her theological studies, Conrad Howes worked as a waitress and took on student loan indebtedness. To honor Sue’s persistence and hard work, and her subsequent ministry as a pastor and a chaplain, Sue’s husband, Michael, years later, established the Sue Conrad Howes Endowed Scholarship. The goal of the scholarship is to provide tuition assistance to single women who are supporting themselves through seminary and preparing for ministry as pastors or chaplains in Mennonite Church USA.
