The Marvin Ewert Scholarship was founded in 2017 to make theological education at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) more affordable. The scholarship provides funds to:

  • A student planning to pursue a chaplaincy position post-seminary
  • First-generation college student (pre-seminary)
  • A student with a demonstrated history of service to others

As of June 30, 2024, the scholarship's market value was $46,289. The earnings are paid out annually to cover approximately 15% of tuition.

More about Marvin

Marvin Ewert grew up on a farm near Freeman, South Dakota. He graduated from Bethel College in North Newton, KS in May 1950 and from Mennonite Biblical Seminary in May 1953. Marvin moved to Newton, KS to become the chaplain at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital in September 1955. After serving in that capacity for a little over a year, he was asked to assume the role of administrator of the hospital, a position he held until he retired in August 1990.

The importance of the chaplaincy as part of healthcare’s mission of service to others was significantly influenced by Marvin’s journey from rural South Dakota, through Bethel College and Mennonite Biblical Seminary (now AMBS), to Bethel Hospital. It was important to him to support others who might be on a similar journey, which motivated him to establish this scholarship.
