More about Lester
Beloved husband of Leota and physician Lester LeVon Mann Jr., born May 10, 1933, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at age 82. He greatly enjoyed his career in medicine: first in family practice, then pediatrics, followed by emergency medicine and medical missions. His years spent working in Zambia, Africa, were the most fulfilling and challenging for him.
As a young man, Lester excelled in basketball in high school and college. In 2002, he was inducted into the Elkhart County (Ind.) Sports Hall of Fame for scoring 34 points in a single tournament game in 1951. Lester's plans were to become a basketball coach and teacher. But during his alternative military service working at a hospital, first in the kitchen and then as an orderly, he heeded the call to become a physician. Even in the realm of medicine, Lester continued to be a teacher making sure those around him knew more than just the "how" but to expand their knowledge into the "why" of medicine.
His faith guided every aspect of his life. He was a member of Freeport Mennonite Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. Music - especially vocal music - was another special interest, singing with the Monroe Men's Chorus and the Freeport Choral Society. He served as team physician for Freeport Sr. High basketball and football teams for many years.
