I am Daniel Nugroho, an international student from Central Java, Indonesia, majoring in Masters of Arts in Christian Formation. I started my study journey at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) in August 2023. Prior to becoming a student at AMBS, I worked as an English Foreign Language Teacher for eight years in Indonesia. While teaching, both in formal academic institutions and through non-profit organizations, I witnessed and experienced many of the devastating effects of covert and unethical faith conversion practices done by many missionaries from Western countries through the field of English education. I would like to sincerely extend my deepest gratitude for your generosity in making this pursuit of education possible for me. I pray that through my education at AMBS, I will be prepared and equipped to share the sincere love of Christ and promote social justice in the context of English education in my home country or wherever God may send me. My hope is to be part of the movement that creates safe and meaningful English learning spaces for my fellow teachers and the students we teach. - Daniel Nugroho, current student, Indonesia
In Indonesia, which continues to follow a patriarchal culture, opportunities for a pastor's wife to study theology are limited. Because of the limited resources that most churches have, financial need to support the further education of a pastor’s wife is not a priority. As a pastor's wife without a theological education, serving the church with my husband became a challenge, especially when I felt the need to be involved in the ministry and was expected to be ready to serve when the pastor was called to serve in more than one church. Although I have been a follower of Christ for many years, I have always felt unqualified for ministry because I had no prior theological background. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to study theology at AMBS through the generosity of the Henry Brown Scholarship. The Henry Brown Scholarship has given Chinese Indonesian women like me the hope to serve God more effectively and the freedom to respond to God's call when needed. Thank you, Brown Scholarship, for being an extension of God’s hand in supporting my education. Your support has enabled me to continue studying at AMBS. - Chialis Thuan Ai Chia, MACF, 2025, Elkhart, Indiana (originally from Indonesia)
I just learned that Henry Brown is the father of Dr. Roland Brown who was the founder of Mennonite Christian Hospital (MCH) in Hualien Taiwan. Because of my work with Mennonite Mission Network as the Regional Director of Asia/Middle East, I have encountered many partners like MCH. In January some of the executive leaders and staff of MCH came to MMN's office in Elkhart, and they visited AMBS as well. Knowing some of these interconnectedness as the former AMBS student and the recipient of Henry Brown scholarship has humbled me to see how in everything God is working in the way we cannot see. I am grateful for the opportunity to study at AMBS, and now serving with MMN especially in Asia/Middle East. To God be the glory! - Andios Santoso, MATPS, 2022, Elkhart, Indiana (originally from Indonesia)
